I thought about coming at this review from the perspective of what 's Frankenstein meant for the future of cinema, and how it was still essentially in its infancy and doing anything even close to what Frankenstein did, changing the culture forever and remaining in the zeitgeist even now, almost a hundred years later, is a monumental achievement and should be viewed as such.
But that's never really been my jam. Frankenstein might have been great for the time, I don't know, I wasn't there, but I personally only ever found it to be okay.
Re-watching it this Halloween was, I think the fourth time I've given it a go, and it's really not as enthralling as people seem to give it credit for.
My roommate fell asleep. It's not that it's black and white either, it just doesn't have as clear a philosophical intention as the book, nor as gripping an output as more modern offerings.
Gimly M Super Reviewer. Oct 23, This classic has its place in film history, but both times I've watched it separated by many years , I've struggled to stay interested.
There are a couple of iconic moments, including the fast cut to tight shots on Boris Karloff as we first see Frankenstein's monster.
However, after some great initial scenes in the graveyard, the direction by James Whale often takes us away from scenes of interest or tension, and doesn't delve deeply enough into the darkness of 'playing god'.
Instead we get silliness, such as the assistant getting the jar marked 'Abnormal Brain'. This one hasn't aged well, and I would 's 'Dr.
Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' instead. Antonius B Super Reviewer. Sep 22, Still unnervingly scary after more than 80 years, James Whale's atmospheric macabre masterpiece maintains its vaulted place as the definitive Gothic horror film.
As sloppy as Tod Browning's production of Dracula sometimes feels, this creature feature shows off a meticulousness in design and preciseness in tone and awareness in feeling.
Every choice - from Franz Waxman's hypnotic score to Jack Pierce's iconic make-up design to Boris Karloff's sympathetic performance - helps to build the perfect beast.
Also, whereas the ultimate vampire story which was filmed the same year didn't play with the author's underlying themes much, Frankenstein consistently dances with the theological and scientific concerns inherent in the source material, all with a sometimes gentle nuanced touch.
Variety reported that it "Looks like a Dracula plus, touching a new peak in horror plays", and described Karloff's performance as "a fascinating acting bit of mesmerism.
John Mosher of The New Yorker was less enthused, calling the film only a "moderate success" and writing that "The makeup department has a triumph to its credit in the monster and there lie the thrills of the picture, but the general fantasy lacks the vitality which that little Mrs.
Shelley was able to give her book. The movie was banned in China under a category of "superstitious films" due to its "strangeness" and unscientific elements.
Frankenstein has continued to receive acclaim from critics and is widely regarded as one of the best films of , as well as one of the greatest movies of all time.
The site's consensus reads: "Still unnerving to this day, Frankenstein adroitly explores the fine line between genius and madness, and features Boris Karloff's legendary, frightening performance as the monster".
Frankenstein also received recognition from the American Film Institute. It was named the 87th greatest movie of all time on Years It's alive! The film was ranked number 56 on AFI's Years The film was a commercial success.
In , MCA Home Video released Frankenstein on LaserDisc. This release restored all the cut footage, as well as most of Frankenstein's "In the name of God!
In , Universal released Frankenstein on VHS and DVD as part of the "Classic Monster Collection". In , Frankenstein was released on Blu-ray as part of the Universal Classic Monsters: The Essential Collection box set, which also includes a total of nine films from the Universal Classic Monsters series.
On August 28, , Frankenstein and its sequels were included in the Universal Classic Monsters: Complete Film Collection Blu-ray box set.
Frankenstein was followed by a string of sequels, beginning with Bride of Frankenstein , in which Elsa Lanchester plays the Monster's bride. The next sequel, Son of Frankenstein , was made, like all those that followed, without Whale or Clive the latter of whom had died in This film featured Karloff's last full film performance as the Monster.
Son of Frankenstein featured Basil Rathbone as Baron Wolf von Frankenstein , Bela Lugosi as bearded hunchback Ygor, and Lionel Atwill as Inspector Krogh.
The Ghost of Frankenstein was released in The movie features Lon Chaney Jr. The fifth installment, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man was released in , directed by Roy William Neill , and starring Bela Lugosi as Frankenstein's Monster.
This is also the sequel to The Wolf Man , with Lon Chaney Jr. In the follow-up, House of Frankenstein , Karloff returned to the series, but not to reprise his role as the Monster, but as the Mad Doctor, the Monster was this time portrayed by Glenn Strange.
Chaney returned as the Wolf Man. Dracula was also featured in the film, played by John Carradine. Its sequel, House of Dracula , featured the same three monsters, Dracula, Frankenstein's Monster and the Wolf Man with the same cast in their portrayal.
Many of the subsequent films which featured Frankenstein's Monster demote the creature to a robotic henchman in someone else's plots, such as in its final Universal film appearance in the deliberately farcical Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein Though it is unrelated to the Universal series, the later Frankenstein has the scientist Frankenstein, here played by Karloff, animate the Monster using a nuclear reactor.
Although Frankenstein's hunchbacked assistant is often referred to as " Igor " in descriptions of the films, he is not so called in the earliest films.
In both Frankenstein and Bride of Frankenstein , Frankenstein has an assistant who is played both times by Dwight Frye who is crippled. In the original film the character is named "Fritz" who is hunchbacked and walks with the aid of a small cane.
Fritz did not originate from the Frankenstein novel, and instead originated from the earliest recorded play adaptation, Presumption; or, the Fate of Frankenstein , where he was played by Robert Keeley.
In Bride of Frankenstein , Frye plays "Karl" a murderer who stands upright but has a lumbering metal brace on both legs that can be heard clicking loudly with every step.
Both characters would be killed by Karloff's monster in their respective films. It was not until Son of Frankenstein that a character called "Ygor" first appears here played by Bela Lugosi and revived by Lugosi in The Ghost of Frankenstein after his apparent murder in the earlier film.
This character — a deranged blacksmith whose neck was broken and twisted due to a botched hanging — befriends the monster and later helps Dr.
Wolf Frankenstein, leading to the "hunchbacked assistant" called "Igor" commonly associated with Frankenstein in popular culture.
Frye also appears in later films in the series, such as in Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man Guillermo del Toro had expressed interest in directing the reboot film for Universal.
The best moments in my mind of Frankenstein , of the novel, are yet to be filmed [ Boris Karloff has the tragedy element nailed down but there are so many versions, including that great screenplay by Frank Darabont that was ultimately not really filmed.
The film will also focus on the religious aspects of Shelley's tale. In an interview with Sci Fi Wire , Jones stated that he learned of the news the same day as everybody else; that "Guillermo did say to the press that he's already cast me as his monster, but we've yet to talk about it.
But in his mind, if that's what he's decided, then it's done It would be a dream come true. Universal Pictures is developing a shared universe of rebooted modern-day versions of their classic Universal Monsters , with various films in different stages of development.
The project will be a joint production between Universal Pictures and Atomic Monster Productions. From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.

Adam encounters the Frankensteins after arriving at their luxurious home. Adam attacks Victor but Elizabeth calms him down. They show Adam his true origins and tell him that they named him Adam.
He is angry to learn that he was created by the Frankensteins and that Victor was already attempting to replace him with another artificially created human.
While Adam is distracted, Victor knocks him down and injects him with a sedative. Victor then attempts to decapitate him with a surgical handsaw while he's unconscious.
Elizabeth tries to stop Victor by hitting him with a metal tray. Victor then swings the saw at her and accidentally slices her neck open.
Victor flees and Elizabeth quickly bleeds to death. Adam takes Elizabeth's body into the nearby woods. The two female monsters look ridiculous.

Director: William A. Levey Stars: John Hart , Ivory Stone , Joe De Sue , Roosevelt Jackson. This blaxploitation film is even worse the the film directly above.
The filmmaking is incompetent, the plotting is repetitive and dull and the monster looks ridiculous. Nice-looking lab, though, even if it does rip off the version.

The fifth Hammer Frankenstein film, which some people like, but I consider the worst in the series for its uneven and padded plot full of gore for its own sake.
It, nonetheless, has its moments and is a relatively slick production for Hammer. G 7 min Animation, Short, Action.

Dracula, who operates a high-end resort away from the human world, goes into overprotective mode when a boy discovers the resort and falls for the count's teenaged daughter.
Director: Genndy Tartakovsky Stars: Adam Sandler , Kevin James , Andy Samberg , Selena Gomez. Like Franken Berry, it's a mere caricature of Shelley's Frankenstein, overly sweet and not very good for you.
Fueled by his restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman's selfless act, Bruce Wayne enlists the help of his new-found ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy.
Director: Zack Snyder Stars: Ben Affleck , Gal Gadot , Jason Momoa , Ezra Miller. A dismal superhero movie, especially when compared to the better integration of comic-book fare and Frankenstein allusions in the above "Age of Ultron," which also involved Joss Whedon behind the scenes.
The Superman resurrection scene, however, is oddly sexually suggestive, with the embryonic chamber looking vaginal, which makes you think about what Flash's role is in all of that.
